When George and Earl Holley created their first carburetor in 1904 for the curved dash Olds, little could they have imagined how successful their simple company would become over the next few decades. Within the next decade, their carburetors would be fitted to over half of the internal combustion engine cars coming off American factory lines, including Ford’s new Model T. For the next decades, Holley carbs would become the go-to air/fuel device, changing the landscape of the internal combustion engine and finding uses in cars, trucks, aviation, and even marine applications. Fast forward to the late fifties and sixties, when Holley carbs would become increasingly popular again, but this time as hot-rodders and muscle car owners looked for ways to increase the speeds and performance of V8 engines. Even today, a good Holley street carburetor is THE component for restoring countless classic cars and trucks. Most rebuilds aren’t even close to complete without Holley parts. What Is A Holley Carburetor?

Since a carburetor’s job is to provide an internal combustion engine with a good mixture of air/fuel, the components and quality of that component are crucial to powering the motor. The Holley carburetor was distinctive when first developed because it had a fuel bowl to trap air and fuel, combined with a throttle plate that opened and closed as the accelerator was depressed (throttle linkage). The accelerator cable engages the linkage allowing more air and fuel to be sucked into the engine’s combustion chambers. As the spark plugs fired, burning the fuel, there was a corresponding increase in the power provided to the engine, and more velocity was translated to the drivetrain.

Holley began with a single bowl carburetor called the “Iron Pot,” which sat atop the engine on the curved dash Olds. It wasn’t long before Henry Ford recognized the value of this newly designed carburetor and partnered with the Holley brothers to produce it for his new Model T. Eventually, after the first world war, Holley branched out, making carburetors for boats, planes, cars, and tractors, almost anything that ran with an internal combustion engine.

Holley made the carburetors and enjoyed great success for three decades, eventually relocating from Detroit to Bowling Green, Ky. During the 1950s, Holley developed a double barrel carburetor that used a parallel air well system and a wide fuel bowl that increased the air/fuel mixture to help increase the amount of horsepower for larger V8 engines. As engine sizes grew in output and power, so did the sophistication of carburetors that Holley produced.

Most cars from the 60s and 70s used Holley carbs. (It is estimated that 2.5 million 3310 carburetors have been manufactured since their introduction in 1965). It didn’t hurt that NASCAR used Holley carburetors on their performance engines for years until switching to electronic fuel injection eliminated the need for old-style carburetors completely.

Who Owns Holley Performance Products Today?

In 2018, Sentinel Capital acquired Holley Performance Products. In 2021, the company merged with Empower Ltd and became a publicly traded listing on the New York Stock Exchange. The company continues to build carburetors in the same factory it had for over fifty years in Bowling Green, Ky.

Over the years, Holley has expanded their line of products to include fuel pumps, gears, exhaust systems and various marine and aviation products. Many automotive brands are a part of the Driven Performance brands family, like Flowmaster, Demon, Brawler, GearFX, and others.

This aluminum square bore flange-type carb, electric choke with mechanical secondaries fits the 4150 model. The carb features dual inlet fuel bowls with glass windows to help with adjustments and tuning. The Brawler line of carburetors is solid and sturdy and built for street performance. The carb fits a 5 3/16" x 5 5/8" square flange bolt pattern. The 4150 has a 650 CFM (cubic feet per minute) which is more than enough for most street applications.

The Holley 4150 was first equipped with the late 50s Thunderbird and was the first four-barrel carb for which Holley is known today. Eventually, the 4150 was used for Fords, Lincolns, and Chevy cars (Corvette and El Camino with the 327 and 427). The carb has also been adapted for use in many race and performance applications.

This 4150 carburetor has everything you need to bring your car into the world of EFI (electric fuel injection), which eliminates hesitation, and cold starts and provides more power to the engine. This particular carb kit includes plenty of hose, an in-line fuel pump, necessary fuel filters, bulkheads, and all the needed hardware. This 2 bbl self-tuning master kit provides two barrels that support 350 horsepower with two 100 lb/hr injectors. This carb kit produces 580 CFM, and has C4/C6 Ford kick-down levers, as well as provisions for the TH350, TH350, 400, and 700R4. It has integrated timing control and an internal fuel pressure regulator that eliminates having to work to find a place to support an external regulator. This square-flange carb has a dual inlet with a vacuum secondary and power valve blow-out. The carburetor has a silver machine finish with center-hung floats and fits most 4160 square bolt patterns. The manual choke helps with engine warm-up.

The 4160 carburetors were used as standard equipment on most Ford models from 1958 - ‘70 models that had larger engines with higher displacements. These FE V8s (332Cu, 352Cu, 390Cu, 406Cu, 427Cu, 428Cu, and 429Cu) were made with cast iron and needed an effective air/fuel delivery system. Some of the most notable models were the 1958 Edsel, the Galaxie 500, and the Ford Fairlane. Later the carburetor would be a part of the Mustang and Thunderbird models. This is another Southwest Speed carburetor that just looks sharp sitting on an engine. The Holley Brawler has a black finish with red billet accents. It is a basic 4150 carb with mechanical secondaries rated for 750 CFM. It fits a square flange bolt pattern for a 5 3/16" x 5 5/8" bolt pattern.. It has dual inlet fuel bowls with sight glass windows. The red billet metering blocks and throttle bodies offer optimal performance, which can be adjusted for even finer tuning.

This four-barrel is a mechanical secondary carb for lightweight vehicles, like a small-block Chevy engine. The dual-feed fuel inlet helps with high-volume fuel input when needed. The carb comes with either a center or side-hung pivot and has adjustable needles and dual metering blocks for accurate tuning of secondary fuel jets.

While the carb is made from polished aluminum alloy and fits a square flange bolt pattern, it has a manual choke allowing for richer fuel mixtures designed to help with colder starts and smoother idling speeds.

This basic carb is not designed for racing applications, but it is an excellent OEM stock replacement for classic rebuilds. If you are restoring anything above a 351Cu and want to squeeze as much velocity and horsepower as possible out of the engine, you should probably not choose this carb. This carb is a better choice for smaller street engines and is optimal for restorers who do not want to see all the fuel in their tanks guzzled when they step onto the gas pedal.

The carb is easy to set up and install, but as with any four-barrel, it can easily flood if you give it too much gas. While the price of this carb might be a bit more than an Edelbrock, there is a serious decrease in horsepower, especially at lower rpms.
