Most of the attention this year went to the 2021 Ford Bronco. Around the same time, Jeep was gearing up for the reveal of the new 2022 Wagoneer. The Wagoneer, made famous by TV shows such as AMC’s Breaking Bad, has been off the market since 1993—until now. Here’s what we know about the new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer.
Jeep revealed the 2022 Grand Wagoneer earlier this month and confirmed the suspicions of automotive journalists—the new Wagoneer is a BIG and brawny sports utility vehicle. Aesthetically, the Wagoneer hits it out of the park with sharp lines and distinct features. On the inside, the new Jeep SUV promises consumers a high-tech and luxurious driving experience with all the latest screens and integrated smart systems.
The Grand Wagoneer, which Jeep unveiled alongside the new Wrangler 4xe, will run alongside the standard Wagoneer. It’s safe to assume the Grand Wagoneer will be an up-trimmed version of the SUV, comparable to the Cadillac Escalade or high-trim Ford Expedition. From our first look, we gather that the new Jeep three-row SUV will be a worthy competitor to the Suburban, Escalade, and Expedition.
Both the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer will share the same powertrain. Unlike the Grand Cherokee, the new Wagoneer family will be built from the Ram 1500 platform. Fundamentally, the new Wagoneer is a Ram pickup with a third row. This is advantageous from a durability standpoint and gives Jeep a foothold in the heavy-duty SUV market.
Given MOPAR’s willingness to drop a V8 into anything, we expect the new Wagoneer to come equipped with the venerable 5.7 HEMI V8. It’s also possible that the new SUV will come with additional engine choices, from the base model 3.6L V6 to the supercharged SRT 392 HEMI. A TrailHawk version of the Wagoneer would be awesome, and we hope FCA will oblige in short order.
We’re excited for Jeep’s new SUV, and we’ll keep you updated as new information becomes available. As of right now, the new Wagoneer is expected to go on sale during the summer of 2021. In the mean time, check out the full 15-minute release video for the new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer below.
